ANAPRI’s centre in Uganda, operating within the Department of Agribusiness and Natural Resource Economics (DANRE) at Makerere University, is set to launch the Agricultural Policy Research Centre (APRC). This significant development aims to strengthen evidence-based policy processes in Uganda’s agri-food systems through rigorous research and data-driven analysis. The launch event will take place on 24th February 2025 at 9:00 AM at the School of Public Health Auditorium, Makerere University.
The APRC is a collaborative initiative between Makerere University’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and the Office of the President under the APEX platform. The Centre is positioned to bridge the critical gap between research and policy, ensuring that agricultural policies are informed by robust, nationally representative data and analytical research. By doing so, it seeks to provide objective, evidence-based solutions to the challenges within Uganda’s agricultural sector.
The Centre envisions a future where research evidence drives policy decisions, fostering sustainable agricultural development in Uganda. Its core mission is to conduct, coordinate, and disseminate high-quality policy research, offering innovative solutions tailored to the realities of Uganda’s food systems. By linking research outputs with policy actions, the Centre will play a pivotal role in advancing Uganda’s agricultural transformation agenda.
The launch event will feature a series of engaging activities designed to highlight the Centre’s strategic importance and foster meaningful discussions among stakeholders. These include keynote addresses from institutional heads who will outline the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the APRC. Dr Antony Chapoto, Executive Director of the ANAPRI Secretariat, will deliver a presentation on “The Role of Policy Research Think Tanks in Food Systems and AU Agenda 2063.” There will also be interactive sessions where attendees can engage speakers through Q&A and panel discussions. Networking opportunities will bring together key stakeholders, including government representatives, research institutions, development partners, and industry experts, to foster collaboration and strengthen policy engagement, and lots more.
The launch of the APRC is a significant step towards evidence-informed agricultural policies in Uganda. By bridging the gap between research and policy, the Centre is set to become a key driver of sustainable development in Uganda’s agri-food sector.
